Let your coach know what you are working on

Defending 1-on-1 is where you are pressuring the ball and trying to either win the ball, delay the attacker or prevent the attacker passing or dribbling forward. This webpage has been especially designed to help you improve your defending against one opponent. Your mission is to complete all the homework tasks below and identify two key specific things that you want to work on and try to improve in your practice sessions, team training or on your own.

Later, we will hear from three brilliant professional footballers - USA's Becky Sauerbrunn, Belgian Vincent Kompany and Germany's Holger Badstuber. We will study the game of Steph Houghton, England Captain - and look at how defending works in the quick game of futsal. Let's begin though with a refresher on how to defend 1 on 1...

HOMEWORK TASK 1

Watch the first video and answer the questions below.

  • Why do you need to slow down as you approach your opponent?
  • Why is it important to be patient when defending 1-on-1?

HOMEWORK TASK 2

Find a friend (or parent), and set-up the activity shown in the video. Practice your 1-on-1 defending, using the recommended Coaching Points shown in the video.

The videos below highlight the brilliant defending of USA's Becky Sauerbrunn, Belgian Vincent Kompany and Germany's Holger Badstuber.

HOMEWORK TASK 3

Which coaching points from the first video are also mentioned by Sauerbrunn, Kompany or Badstuber?

HOMEWORK TASK 4

Watch the video below of England captain Steph Houghton playing in tne Champions League for Manchester City. The kind of 1v1 contests she is involved in are a bit different from the examples we have seen before. Pay particular attention to her focus, concentration and determination. These are key elements of all kinds of individual defending. What impresses you most about the way she plays?

HOMEWORK TASK 5

Our final video is of individual defending in Futsal. Barcelona are playing in Yellow. Watch one of their defenders during the video, and see how completely focused they are on their task. Watch the video and read the on-screen text.

  • How well do you focus when you are defending?
  • What can you take from Steph Houghton or the Barcelona futsal team that you could add to your game?

Dear Learner,

Welcome to your HOMEWORK page! Here you will learn about your chosen topic. It is a good idea to save the URL for this page to your favourites so you can easily return to it when you need to.

You need to work through the tasks on the page, one at a time. This might mean watching videos, it might mean doing other tasks and activities. It may be a good idea to take notes also. Remember that the more work and effort you put into the tasks, the more you will learn and the better you will become.

For most topics, there will be a PRINT OUT at the bottom of the page. You need to print this, complete the questions, and take to your coach. You need to do this so the coaches know what you are working on and are able to help you.
